Short answer

Chicken skin on the knees usually describes rough, small follicle-centred bumps that can improve with gentle moisturising and careful skin care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the knee bumps may mean

The texture often comes from keratin, a normal skin protein, collecting around hair follicles. Knees can feel especially rough because bending, friction from clothing, kneeling, and dry air disturb the surface. Keratosis pilaris is one possible explanation; folliculitis is another when bumps are inflamed around follicles. The appearance alone cannot confirm which process is present. Note whether the bumps are skin-coloured or red, itchy or tender, and whether they contain fluid.

Comfort measures to try

Use a short, lukewarm wash and a fragrance-free cleanser. Apply a thick moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Products containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may soften built-up scale, but introduce one active product at a time and stop if burning or marked irritation develops. Do not scrub with a rough mitt, squeeze the bumps, or shave aggressively over them. Cover the knees from repeated rubbing and protect exposed skin from sun, which can make leftover marks more noticeable.

When to seek medical care

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the area becomes painful, warm, swollen, rapidly more red, or starts draining pus. Prompt care is also sensible if fever or feeling unwell occurs with a spreading rash. If a persistent rough patch does not settle with gentle care, a clinician can distinguish keratosis pilaris from folliculitis, eczema, contact irritation, or another cause.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bumps look more like keratosis pilaris or folliculitis, which moisturiser or active ingredient suits your skin, and how long to try it before changing the plan. Mention recent shaving, friction, new products, itching, tenderness, or discharge.

Questions people ask

Is chicken skin on the knees contagious?

Keratin-related rough follicle bumps are not contagious. A clinician should assess bumps that are painful, draining, or spreading.

Can knee bumps disappear?

They may become less noticeable with consistent gentle care, although the texture can return when skin becomes dry or irritated.
