What should you know about chicken pox on dark skin?

Inflammation is not always bright red on richly pigmented skin. A follicle bump may appear darker, purple-brown, grey, or simply feel rough. Looking for texture, distribution, swelling, warmth, itch, tenderness, and drainage is often more useful than colour alone. Tiny uniform bumps on the outer upper arms or thighs can fit keratosis pilaris. Tender bumps centred on hairs, especially after shaving, sweating, or friction, can fit folliculitis.

Inflammation may leave temporary darker or lighter patches after the bump settles. Picking and abrasive scrubbing increase that risk. A clinician should assess a new, changing, painful, or unusual area rather than relying on colour comparisons from photographs.

Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, and avoid scrubbing with rough cloths or brushes. Moisturise after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp. If the surface is rough but not inflamed, a product with urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may help; choose one and test it on a small area first. Do not apply acids to cracked skin or freshly shaved areas. Pause any product that causes persistent stinging. Reduce friction from tight clothing and avoid picking, because irritation can make post-inflammatory colour changes more visible.

Book an assessment when bumps persist despite gentle care, recur in the same areas, or cause pain, pus, crusting, or marked itch. Seek prompt care if warmth, swelling, tenderness, or discoloration is spreading, or if fever or feeling unwell accompanies the skin change. A dermatologist can examine the follicles directly and recommend treatment that addresses both inflammation and the risk of lingering colour change.

Ask whether the pattern is keratosis pilaris, folliculitis, eczema, or another cause. Ask which active ingredients are appropriate for your skin, whether shaving should change, how to protect irritated areas, and how to manage darker marks after inflammation. Show when the bumps began and mention any new products, hair removal, sweating, or rubbing.
