Short answer

Chest pain when lifting your left arm may be caused by a strained chest or shoulder muscle, but movement-related pain does not rule out a serious heart or lung problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Breathlessness, fainting, sweating, spreading pain, or sudden severe symptoms

What the pattern can mean

Pain that starts with reaching, lifting, twisting, or pressing the area often points toward the muscles, ribs, shoulder, or the joints between them. It may follow exercise, carrying, an awkward sleeping position, or repeated upper-body work. A trapped or irritated nerve can add burning, tingling, or pain travelling into the arm.

Other causes can feel similar. Indigestion or Acid Reflux may cause burning behind the breastbone. Angina can cause pressure or discomfort brought on by exertion, while a lung condition may cause pain with breathing or coughing. The trigger, exact location, duration, breathing symptoms, sweating, nausea, and personal heart risk factors all help a clinician assess the pattern.

What to do now

Stop the activity and rest in a comfortable position. Avoid heavy lifting until the pain has settled and notice whether gentle movement, touch, breathing, or meals change it. Record when it began, what you were doing, how long each episode lasts, and any breathlessness, dizziness, nausea, sweating, fever, rash, or arm weakness.

Arrange a medical assessment if the pain is new, keeps returning, limits normal activity, or does not improve as expected. A clinician may examine your chest wall, shoulder, heart, and lungs and decide whether tests are needed. Do not use someone else’s heart medicine or delay care because the pain changes with movement.

When to seek urgent help

Call emergency services now for chest pressure or pain that is severe, persistent, spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, or accompanied by trouble breathing, fainting, cold sweating, marked weakness, or sudden confusion. Seek urgent help for sudden sharp pain with breathlessness, coughing blood, or a very fast heartbeat.

A new one-sided rash or blistering pain may need prompt assessment, as can chest pain with fever and worsening cough. If symptoms are mild but recur with exertion, stop exertion and arrange prompt medical advice; a pattern that settles with rest still deserves attention.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could this be a chest-wall or shoulder injury? Does the pain pattern need heart or lung tests? Which symptoms should send me to emergency care? When can I safely return to lifting, and what pain relief is suitable with my other medicines?

Questions people ask

Does pain with arm movement prove the problem is muscular?

No. It can support a chest-wall or shoulder cause, but serious heart and lung conditions can overlap with movement-related discomfort.

Should I exercise through this pain?

No. Stop the activity, note the symptoms, and seek assessment if the pain is new, recurrent, or linked with exertion.
