What should you know about chemo throat pain?

Some chemotherapy medicines can inflame the lining of the mouth and throat or make saliva less protective. Pain may feel scratchy, burning, or sharp when swallowing. Reduced immunity can also make an infection more concerning than an ordinary sore throat. A sore throat is a common presentation of several everyday conditions, including Common Cold, Influenza, Tonsillitis, and Strep Throat; treatment-related irritation can occur at the same time. Acid Reflux or Allergic Rhinitis may add throat irritation, while COVID-19 and Glandular Fever are other possible causes of a sore throat. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

Tell your oncology team when the pain began, whether swallowing is difficult, and whether you have mouth sores, fever, cough, or white patches. Sip cool or warm fluids according to comfort, choose soft moist foods, and avoid smoking, alcohol, very spicy foods, and sharp or acidic foods if they sting. Use only mouth rinses, pain medicines, lozenges, or other products approved by your treatment team, because some ingredients can irritate tissue or interact with treatment. Keep your mouth clean with a soft toothbrush and follow any oral-care plan you were given.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a new or worsening sore throat, fever, chills, pus, white coating, bleeding, or pain that prevents drinking or taking prescribed medicines. Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, confusion, or signs of severe dehydration such as very little urine and marked dizziness. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are escalating during a chemotherapy cycle.
