Chemical Peeling for the Face: What to Know

A clinician applies an exfoliating solution for a controlled period. The depth and ingredient depend on your skin, the concern being treated, and the desired degree of peeling. A superficial peel may leave mild tightness or flaking, while a stronger treatment can cause more visible redness and shedding. Peels may be considered for acne, clogged pores, uneven tone, sun spots, or sun-damaged skin. They do not erase every mark, and darker or recently irritated skin may be more prone to temporary colour change. Glycolic acid is one material used in some peels; it is not suitable for every person or every treatment plan.

Tell the clinician about eczema, cold sores, active rashes, recent tanning, medicines, and products that irritate your skin. Follow instructions about pausing retinoids or other exfoliants rather than making changes without guidance. Arrive with clean skin and avoid picking, scrubbing, waxing, or peeling loose flakes afterward. Use the recommended gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sun protection. Keep treated skin away from deliberate sun exposure while it heals, because inflammation can deepen discoloration. Do not schedule another exfoliating procedure until the skin has recovered.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for worsening pain, spreading swelling, blistering, pus, fever, or redness that continues to intensify. Seek urgent care for facial swelling that affects breathing or vision. A darkening or lightening patch that persists beyond the expected recovery period also needs assessment, particularly after a stronger peel. Do not try to neutralise a product at home unless the treating clinician has given you exact instructions.
