Cheilitis around the mouth

The lips may become dry, red, scaly, sore or split. When the corners are involved, saliva can collect in the folds and make them macerated, tender or crusted. Irritation from licking, dental products or cosmetics can affect the surrounding skin, while infection and inflammatory skin conditions require different care.

Use lukewarm water and a soft cloth, then pat rather than rub. Keep saliva from sitting in the corners and apply a plain barrier ointment to the external skin.
