What should you know about granulomatous cheilitis?

The lips may feel firm, enlarged, tight, numb, or uncomfortable, and the swelling can come and go or gradually persist. Granulomatous inflammation is a finding, not a complete explanation of why it happened. A clinician may review oral symptoms, skin changes, medicines, allergies, and general health; examination and sometimes a biopsy or other tests help separate local lip inflammation from conditions affecting the mouth or wider body.

Use a bland fragrance-free ointment to reduce dryness and avoid licking, biting, irritant cosmetics, and unnecessary lip products. Photograph changes and record episodes of swelling, mouth ulcers, abdominal symptoms, or eye complaints to discuss at review. Emollient therapy can support comfort. Treatment may require a tailored anti-inflammatory plan, including topical corticosteroids in selected cases, but the cause and affected areas guide the choice.

Arrange a dermatology or medical review for new, persistent, recurrent, or progressively firm lip swelling. Seek urgent help if swelling develops quickly with hives, wheezing, faintness, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Prompt assessment is also sensible for fever, pus, severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, or new weakness or facial asymmetry.
