What should you know about eczematous cheilitis?

Short answer
Eczematous cheilitis causes dry, inflamed, itchy or sore lips after irritation or contact sensitivity.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Dryness, redness, scale, itching, or soreness
- Common trigger groups
- Lip products, toothpaste, saliva, and weather
What it means
The lip skin may become red, flaky, cracked, tight, or swollen. Triggers can include fragranced lip products, cosmetics, toothpaste ingredients, saliva, weather exposure, or repeated licking. A clinician may ask about new products and examine the lips and nearby skin; patch testing can sometimes help identify contact allergy. Similar-looking problems include infection and other forms of cheilitis, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.
What you can do
Stop newly introduced or fragranced lip products and avoid licking, biting, peeling, or scrubbing the lips. Apply a bland, fragrance-free protective ointment regularly, especially after eating and before sleep; emollient therapy can support the skin barrier. If inflammation persists, a clinician may recommend a short, appropriate course of topical corticosteroids, with instructions for the lip area. Keep a note of products that worsen symptoms.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if cracking, swelling, or soreness does not settle after removing likely irritants, keeps returning, or interferes with eating and speaking. Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing facial or lip swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, widespread blistering, pus, fever, or severe pain.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be contact allergy, irritation, infection, or another type of cheilitis? Which products should I stop, and how long should I use a protective ointment? If a steroid is advised, where and for how long should it be applied? Would patch testing be useful?

Questions people ask
Can eczematous cheilitis affect the skin around the mouth?
Yes. Irritation or contact sensitivity may extend beyond the lip edge, particularly where products or saliva touch the skin.
Should I peel flaky skin from my lips?
No. Peeling can reopen tiny cracks and prolong inflammation; use a bland protective ointment instead.
