What should you know about cheek lump under skin?

A tender, warm, red lump may be an inflamed spot, cyst, or boil. A firm lump that remains unchanged can have a different explanation, while a growth that bleeds, crusts, repeatedly scabs, or does not heal needs professional review. A lump's appearance alone cannot identify its cause.

A clinician may examine the surface and the tissue beneath it, ask when it began, and check for pain, discharge, growth, trauma, dental symptoms, or a recent injection. Do not assume that a cheek lump is cancer; many skin lumps are benign, but persistent or changing lesions still deserve assessment.

Do not squeeze, lance, repeatedly press, or apply harsh chemicals to the lump. Keep the area clean and note its approximate size, colour, tenderness, and whether it changes. Arrange a dermatology assessment if it persists, enlarges, recurs, or is difficult to distinguish from surrounding tissue.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. A boil may need medical care, while selected inflammatory lumps may be considered for a steroid injection into the skin. A clinician should decide this after examination.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapid enlargement, severe pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, facial swelling, or difficulty opening the mouth. Arrange timely review for bleeding, ulceration, repeated crusting, numbness, or a sore that does not heal. Urgent help is appropriate if swelling affects breathing or swallowing.

Ask what the lump most resembles, whether it needs imaging or sampling, which changes should trigger faster review, whether squeezing could worsen it, and which treatment is appropriate if inflammation, a cyst, or another growth is confirmed.
