What should you know about chapped and swollen lips?

Chapped and swollen lips may result from dryness or irritation, but sudden swelling can signal an allergic reaction requiring urgent attention. Licking the lips, wind, sun, dehydration, fragranced products, and contact with irritating foods can damage the surface. Swelling that begins quickly, spreads, or affects the mouth and throat is more concerning than gradual dryness alone.

Dry, cracked skin may sting or bleed slightly, while contact irritation can cause burning, redness, and scaling. Infection, inflammation, trauma, or a reaction to food, medicine, toothpaste, or lip products can also cause swelling. Angioedema is a condition that can cause deeper, sudden swelling of the lips and may occur with hives or other allergic symptoms.

Stop any newly introduced lip or oral-care product and avoid licking, biting, peeling, or fragranced balms. Apply a bland protective ointment to cracked skin, drink fluids, and protect the lips from sun and wind. Do not try a new medicated cream on swollen lips without advice. If the swelling followed a food, medicine, sting, or cosmetic, record the exposure and seek medical guidance.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing or swallowing, throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, dizziness, faintness, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Seek medical care promptly for severe pain, pus, fever, blistering, extensive sores, or swelling that keeps returning. A clinician can assess whether the pattern fits angioedema, irritation, infection, or another cause.
