Chamomile Tea and Tamoxifen

Do not stop or skip tamoxifen because you have already had chamomile tea. Tell your care team how much you drink, how often you drink it, and whether the product contains other herbs.

A weak cup of tea, a concentrated extract, and a multi-ingredient sleep supplement do not provide the same exposure. Extracts and capsules can contain more concentrated plant compounds, while blended teas may add ingredients with their own medicine interactions.

Tamoxifen must be processed by the body to produce active forms, and other medicines or supplements can sometimes interfere with that process. Limited interaction information means absence of a warning on a packet does not establish compatibility with your treatment.

Show the exact tea, extract, or supplement label to your oncology pharmacist. Include non-prescription medicines and other herbal products in the same review, because combined ingredients can change the advice.

If your team agrees that tea is reasonable, follow the amount and frequency they recommend and avoid switching to a concentrated preparation without another check. Keep taking tamoxifen on its prescribed schedule unless the clinician managing it tells you to change.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse after drinking chamomile, as these can signal a serious allergic reaction.

During tamoxifen treatment, seek urgent medical care for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing blood, or new swelling, warmth, or pain in one leg or arm. These symptoms require assessment regardless of whether you have used chamomile.

Ask whether your specific product is suitable, whether occasional tea differs from daily use in your situation, and which alternative drink would fit your treatment. Also ask whom to contact if a new supplement is recommended by another clinician.
