What should you know about chafing heat rash?

Short answer
Chafing heat rash develops when friction, warmth, and trapped sweat irritate skin, causing redness, stinging, itching, or small bumps.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How friction and heat affect skin
Heat rash, also called prickly heat, can occur when sweat is held against the skin. Repeated rubbing from clothing, skin folds, exercise, or humid conditions can weaken the surface barrier and intensify the irritation. Affected skin may feel raw or prickly and can show a fine rash or clustered bumps.
This pattern is not automatically an infection. However, persistent moisture can allow other problems to develop, so a clinician may distinguish heat rash from contact irritation, follicle inflammation, or another rash by examining its distribution and surface.
Steps that calm the area
Gently rinse the area, pat it dry, and reduce rubbing with loose, breathable clothing. Take breaks from activities that repeatedly heat or abrade the skin. A bland barrier or moisturiser may support the skin surface; see Emollient Therapy for the general approach.
Do not scratch, scrub, or apply fragranced products to broken skin. A clinician may consider a short course of a topical corticosteroid for selected inflammatory rashes, but steroid choice and duration matter, especially in skin folds. Heat Rash provides more background on the condition.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if the rash spreads, becomes increasingly painful, develops pus or crusting, or does not improve after the trigger is removed. Seek urgent care for rapidly expanding redness with fever, severe swelling, or feeling faint. A new rash after a medicine or with breathing difficulty needs immediate help.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether the pattern fits heat rash, whether a product or fabric may be contributing, and whether you need treatment for inflammation or a different skin condition.

Questions people ask
Is chafing heat rash contagious?
Friction and heat rash itself is not contagious, although another rash with a similar appearance may have a different cause.
Can I use a steroid cream?
Ask a clinician first, particularly for groin or skin-fold areas, because the correct strength and duration depend on the diagnosis.
