Cervical erosion symptoms and warning signs

Cervical erosion may cause no symptoms, or it may cause discharge and light bleeding from the cervix. When symptoms occur, they can include increased mucus-like discharge, spotting between periods, bleeding after sex, or bleeding during a cervical examination. Some people also report discomfort during or after sex.

Cervical ectropion places delicate glandular cells from the cervical canal on the outer surface of the cervix. These cells produce mucus and can bleed when touched, which explains discharge and contact bleeding. Hormonal changes can make ectropion more noticeable, including during pregnancy or while using some hormonal contraception.

The same symptoms can arise from infection, cervical polyps, pregnancy-related conditions, hormonal bleeding, or cervical cell changes. Ectropion is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis that can be made from the symptom pattern alone. A normal appearance at an earlier examination also does not explain a new episode of abnormal bleeding.

Record when bleeding happens, its amount, whether it follows sex, and where you are in your menstrual cycle. Note discharge colour, consistency, smell, itching, pelvic discomfort, missed periods, pregnancy possibility, and any new sexual partner. Tell the clinician about contraception and medicines that may affect bleeding. An examination and selected tests can distinguish ectropion from causes that need different care.

Seek urgent medical care if vaginal bleeding is heavy, you feel faint, pelvic pain is severe or worsening, or bleeding occurs during pregnancy. Fever with pelvic pain or foul-smelling discharge also needs prompt assessment. Book a timely appointment for repeated bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, blood-stained discharge, or any symptom that persists or changes. These warning signs require evaluation because of the symptom itself, regardless of whether ectropion has been seen before.

Ask whether the cervix was fully seen, what findings point to ectropion, and whether pregnancy testing, infection testing, or cervical screening is appropriate. You may also ask what symptom changes should bring you back, whether your contraception could be contributing, and when treatment is considered for ongoing contact bleeding or discharge.
