Medicine and treatment for cervical erosion

Cervical erosion often needs no medicine; treatment is guided by symptoms and the cause confirmed on examination. Cervical ectropion is a benign change in which delicate glandular cells are visible on the outer cervix. Tablets or vaginal creams do not normally reverse this cell position, and treatment is unnecessary when it causes no difficulty.

A clinician first checks that bleeding or discharge is not better explained by infection, pregnancy-related problems, cervical cell changes, or another gynaecological condition. If ectropion is confirmed and symptoms such as bleeding after sex or persistent excess discharge are bothersome, a clinician may discuss treating the surface of the cervix. Options can include silver nitrate, heat-based cautery, or freezing treatment, depending on the area and the service providing care.

If hormonal contraception appears to be contributing, changing the method may be discussed. Do not stop prescribed contraception or switch products without planning another reliable method with a qualified clinician. Antibiotics are used only when an infection is identified or strongly suspected; they are not a routine treatment for ectropion itself.

Arrange an assessment before trying over-the-counter vaginal products for unexplained bleeding or changed discharge. Bring a note of when symptoms occur, whether they follow sex, the colour or smell of discharge, current contraception, possible pregnancy, and medicines that affect bleeding. If a procedure is offered, ask what it involves, whether local anaesthetic is used, what discharge or cramping to expect, and which aftercare instructions apply to you.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever with pelvic symptoms, or bleeding during pregnancy. After cervical treatment, contact the treating service promptly if bleeding is heavier than they told you to expect, pain is increasing, or discharge becomes heavy or develops a strong unpleasant smell. For new bleeding between periods or after sex, arrange an assessment rather than treating it as ectropion on your own.

Ask which finding supports the diagnosis, whether infection testing or cervical screening is needed, and whether observation is reasonable. If symptoms affect daily life or intimacy, ask how each procedure may help, what side effects to anticipate, how to care for the area while it heals, and when your symptoms should be reassessed.
