Cervical ectropion pain: what it can mean

The delicate glandular cells visible on the outer cervix can bleed when touched during sex, a pelvic examination or cervical screening. Some people report discomfort during or after sex, but pain should not automatically be attributed to ectropion.

Pain may come from vaginal dryness, irritation, an infection, pelvic floor tension, endometriosis, an ovarian problem or another pelvic condition. Its timing and location matter: pain at the vaginal entrance differs from deep pelvic pain, and cramping after a procedure differs from pain that began beforehand.

Ectropion is a benign change in which glandular cells from inside the cervical canal are present on its outer surface. It is influenced by hormones and is not itself a precancerous change.

Arrange a clinical review if pain recurs, interferes with sex, or accompanies bleeding or altered discharge. Note where the pain occurs, whether it relates to sex or periods, and whether you have itching, odour, urinary symptoms or fever. A clinician may examine the cervix and take swabs when infection is possible.

Stay up to date with routine cervical screening, but do not wait for a screening appointment to discuss symptoms. Screening checks for cervical cell changes; it is not a diagnostic test for pelvic pain.

Seek urgent medical advice for severe or worsening pelvic pain, faintness, fever, heavy bleeding, or pain with a missed period or possible pregnancy. These features need assessment regardless of whether ectropion has been seen before.

Book a timely appointment for pain during or after sex, repeated bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, or discharge that changes in colour, smell or amount. A previous ectropion diagnosis should not prevent fresh symptoms from being checked.

Ask whether the location and pattern of pain suggest a cause outside the cervix, whether infection testing or a pelvic examination is appropriate, and whether your cervical screening is current. If symptoms started after ectropion treatment, ask what after-effects are expected and which changes warrant examination.
