What should you know about cephalexin for eczema?

Eczema weakens the skin barrier and scratching can create openings where bacteria enter. Signs that make infection more concerning include new crusting, oozing, increasing warmth, tenderness, swelling, or redness that spreads beyond the usual eczema area. These changes can occur alongside the dry, itchy patches of atopic dermatitis; they do not prove infection on their own.

Cephalexin targets certain bacteria. It will not calm the underlying itch or repair the barrier by itself, so your treatment plan may also include prescribed anti-inflammatory care, gentle cleansing, and regular moisturising. A clinician may choose another approach if the appearance suggests a different cause or if the bacteria are unlikely to respond.

Take cephalexin exactly as prescribed and do not share leftover antibiotics. Follow the label about timing, complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes it, and tell the clinic if symptoms are not settling. Keep broken areas clean, use separate towels, wash hands after applying creams, and avoid picking crusts. Continue suitable eczema skin care unless a clinician tells you to pause it.

Seek urgent help for facial or eye swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, or a rapidly spreading rash after a dose. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, marked pain, red streaks, pus, or an area that is expanding. A rash that does not improve may need reassessment rather than a longer antibiotic course.
