What should you know about cephalexin for boils?

A boil is a tender, infected lump that may collect pus. Cephalexin is an antibiotic used for some susceptible bacterial skin infections, but a painful lump is not automatically treated with this medicine. The clinician considers whether there is spreading redness, surrounding cellulitis, fever, immune risk, allergy history, or a drainable collection. Antibiotics may be less effective when pus is trapped behind a wall, because opening and draining the collection can be the key treatment. A lump can also have a non-infectious cause.

Do not use leftover cephalexin or share someone else’s prescription. If it is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and complete the planned course unless the prescriber changes it. Tell the clinician about penicillin or cephalosporin reactions, kidney problems, pregnancy, and other medicines. Keep the area clean, cover drainage with a clean dressing, wash your hands, and avoid squeezing or cutting the boil. A clinician can decide whether you need antibiotics, a culture, or abscess drainage.

Seek urgent assessment for fever with worsening skin redness, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, red streaks, confusion, or a boil near the eye, nose, or spine. Arrange prompt care if you have diabetes, take immune-suppressing medicine, or develop repeated boils. During treatment, urgent help is needed for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering rash, or severe watery or bloody diarrhoea.
