Cepacol products commonly contain a local anaesthetic, an antiseptic, or both, depending on the formulation. A lozenge dissolves slowly in the mouth, while a spray is directed towards the throat. These ingredients can reduce the feeling of irritation for a while, but they cannot show whether the sore throat is related to a viral illness, reflux, allergy, or a bacterial infection. Sore throat is a common presentation of the common cold, influenza, COVID-19, strep throat, and tonsillitis. Acid reflux and allergic rhinitis can also irritate the throat.

Read the product label before use. Different Cepacol products have different ingredients, age limits, and directions. Avoid exceeding the labelled amount, and do not give a lozenge to someone who may choke on it.

Sip fluids, choose soft foods, and rest your voice. Warm drinks or cool foods may feel soothing. Use Cepacol only as directed on its packaging, and stop if it causes a rash, swelling, marked numbness, or breathing difficulty. If symptoms continue, a GP can assess your throat and decide whether testing or another treatment is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, confusion, or severe dehydration. Arrange medical assessment for a sore throat that is severe, keeps returning, is accompanied by a persistent high temperature, or makes swallowing difficult. A clinician may look for features of tonsillitis or strep throat and consider your other symptoms before recommending treatment.
