What should you know about central acting muscle relaxants?

They may be prescribed for a limited period when painful spasm restricts movement or sleep. They ease symptoms rather than correcting an underlying strain, disc problem, joint condition or neurological disorder.

These medicines act differently from drugs that work directly at the muscle. Depending on the product, they may dampen nerve signals associated with spasm or reduce excessive muscle tone. The result can be easier movement, but weakness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision or slowed reactions may occur.

The choice of medicine depends on the type of spasm, other health conditions and current medicines. Some products need gradual dose reduction after regular use; stopping suddenly may cause troublesome symptoms. The prescriber or pharmacist can explain instructions for the specific drug.

Take only the prescribed amount and check what to do after a missed dose. Until you know the effect, avoid driving, operating machinery, working at height and other tasks requiring quick reactions. Alcohol and other sedating medicines can intensify drowsiness or slow breathing, so discuss combinations before use.

Share a full list of prescriptions, non-prescription medicines and supplements with the clinician. Get emergency help for trouble breathing, extreme difficulty waking, collapse, a seizure, blue or grey lips, or swelling of the face or throat. These can indicate severe sedation, overdose or an allergic reaction.

Contact the prescriber promptly for confusion, repeated falls, marked weakness, severe agitation, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a widespread rash. New loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly worsening limb weakness requires urgent assessment for a neurological cause rather than simply treating the spasm.

Confirm the goal of treatment, when to take each dose, how long to continue, and whether the medicine should be tapered. Ask which activities to avoid, which side effects merit a call, and whether any pain medicines, sleep aids, antihistamines or supplements could interact. Also ask what plan will address the source of the spasm.
