Cellulitis and Topical Antibiotics

Cellulitis affects deeper layers of skin, while topical medicine is applied to the surface. A clinician chooses treatment after examination. A small superficial wound is not the same as cellulitis, and a cream may have a role only when specifically advised. Product irritation can add redness and itching. Athlete's Foot can create cracks that allow bacteria to enter.

Do not apply leftover or borrowed antibiotic cream to a spreading area. If prescribed for a specific wound, use it as directed and report burning, rash, or worsening symptoms. Gently clean the area, avoid picking, and note changes in Skin Redness, Painful Skin, warmth, and Skin Swelling. Tell the clinician about allergies and Type 2 Diabetes.

Seek urgent help when redness spreads quickly, pain is severe, swelling is marked, or Fever develops. Confusion, faintness, unusual weakness, or breathing difficulty may indicate Sepsis and require emergency attention.

Ask whether the problem is cellulitis or a surface infection, whether a topical antibiotic is appropriate, and what treatment is needed for deeper tissue. Ask how to dress the area and which changes require immediate review.
