Cellulitis That Won't Go Away

Skin redness, warmth, pain, and swelling can take time to settle, but ongoing or expanding symptoms should not be judged by appearance alone. The infection may need a different medicine, a different route of treatment, or examination for a pocket of pus that requires a procedure. Another condition, such as an inflammatory reaction, contact dermatitis, or a clot, can resemble cellulitis. Athlete's Foot, a wound, or another break in the skin may keep allowing bacteria to enter. Type 2 Diabetes and reduced circulation can also affect healing.

Contact the clinician who diagnosed you if symptoms are not clearly improving, return after initial improvement, or spread beyond the original area. Take the prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not share it or use someone else's medicine. Keep the skin clean, elevate an affected limb when comfortable, and avoid squeezing, massage, or harsh products. Photographing the area and noting changes in pain, temperature, swelling, and Fever can help the review. Mention missed doses, vomiting, allergies, recent wounds, and any foot rash.

Seek urgent care if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, swelling is marked, skin changes colour, or you develop Fever, confusion, faintness, unusual sleepiness, or difficulty breathing. These may indicate a serious infection or Sepsis. Urgency depends on the red flags and your overall condition, not simply on how long the patch has been present.

Ask what improvement should look like, whether the diagnosis still fits, whether a sample or imaging is needed, and whether an abscess or another source is present. Ask how to care for the entry point, whether Athlete's Foot needs treatment, and which symptoms should send you straight to urgent care.
