What should you know about systemic symptoms with cellulitis?

Systemic symptoms are changes felt beyond the infected patch of skin. They can include fever, chills, sweats, unusual tiredness, headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or feeling suddenly unwell. Cellulitis may also cause local redness, warmth, swelling, and pain. A whole-body response does not tell you the exact bacterium, and the absence of fever does not rule out a significant infection. People with Type 2 Diabetes, immune suppression, or reduced sensation may notice fewer typical signs, so a changing wound still deserves attention.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if cellulitis is accompanied by any new whole-body symptom. While arranging care, rest, drink fluids if you can, keep any wound clean and covered, and avoid strenuous activity. Do not delay assessment by trying to lower a fever alone or by using leftover antibiotics. Record when the skin changes and systemic symptoms began, and bring a list of medicines, allergies, and relevant conditions.

Use emergency services for confusion, fainting, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, cold or clammy skin, or rapidly worsening pain, redness, or swelling. These features can occur with sepsis and need immediate evaluation. Red streaking, a high or persistent fever, or deterioration despite treatment also warrants urgent review. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused.
