Cellulitis swelling after antibiotics: what should you know?

The infection irritates small blood vessels and surrounding tissue, allowing fluid to collect under the skin. Antibiotics address the bacterial cause, while the body's inflammatory response may take longer to settle. A useful sign is a gradual reduction in the area of redness, heat, tightness, or swelling. Persistent swelling can also reflect an abscess, poor circulation, lymphatic drainage problems, or a diagnosis that needs reconsideration.

Finish the prescribed course unless the clinician who prescribed it tells you to change it. Elevate the affected limb during rest, avoid tight clothing or footwear over the area, and keep the skin protected from further cuts. Marking the edge of redness with a pen can help you notice whether it is moving outward, but do not delay care while monitoring. Arrange a clinical review if swelling is not settling, is interfering with movement, or returns after improving.

Get urgent help for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, a dusky or blistered appearance, new numbness, or difficulty moving the limb. Fever, chills, confusion, faintness, or feeling very unwell can signal a more serious infection. Sudden swelling of one leg with chest pain or breathlessness is an emergency. Facial or eye swelling also needs urgent assessment.
