Can cellulitis spread to other people?

A damaged skin barrier gives bacteria a route beneath the surface. Cracked skin linked with Athlete's Foot, eczema, surgery, or an injury can be relevant. Redness and swelling spreading across the same person's limb means the infection is extending through nearby tissue, not travelling between people. A clinician can check for an abscess or another cause of inflammation.

Keep any open area covered with a clean dressing and wash your hands after changing it. Do not share towels, razors, socks, or dressings, and launder items soiled by wound fluid. Avoid scratching. Arrange medical assessment for suspected cellulitis and follow prescribed treatment; do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else's medicine.

Seek urgent care if redness is rapidly expanding, pain is severe, blisters or darkening appear, or you develop fever, shaking chills, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or profound weakness. Such symptoms may signal a serious infection, including Sepsis. Type 2 Diabetes or poor immunity warrants early clinical advice for any infected wound.

Ask whether the infection is open or draining, how to dress it, whether anyone needs testing, how to treat a fungal entry point, and which changes mean urgent review. Confirm when normal contact and shared household activities are reasonable again.
