Cellulitis side effects and warning signs

Inflammation can make the skin feel hot, tight, shiny, or painful. Swelling may make nearby movement uncomfortable, and the affected patch can enlarge. Some people develop Fever, chills, tiredness, or swollen nearby glands. A pocket of pus may form and require a different procedure from antibiotics alone. Infection can also enter the bloodstream and become Sepsis, particularly when treatment is delayed or health conditions reduce the body's ability to respond. Athlete's Foot and small skin breaks can allow repeat episodes.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly for suspected cellulitis. Follow prescribed treatment instructions, keep the skin clean, avoid scratching or squeezing the area, and elevate a swollen limb when comfortable. Do not share antibiotics or stop them early without medical advice. Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, medicines, Type 2 Diabetes, immune problems, and previous episodes so the plan can be tailored.

Seek urgent care if the redness or swelling is spreading quickly, pain is escalating, a blister or darkening area appears, or you develop high Fever, shaking, confusion, faintness, fast breathing, vomiting, or difficulty staying awake. These symptoms may point to a deeper or body-wide infection. A severe reaction after starting a medicine—such as facial swelling or trouble breathing—also needs emergency help.
