Cellulitis rash treatment: what to know

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper skin and tissue. A clinician considers the rash's location, rate of change, pain, swelling, temperature, any wound, and your general health. Mild infections may be treated with an antibiotic taken by mouth. More severe illness, difficulty taking medicine, or infection near a sensitive area may require hospital assessment and antibiotics through a vein. A sample is not always available because intact skin may have no fluid to test. The visible redness may take time to fade after bacteria are controlled, so the trend in pain, warmth, swelling, and overall wellbeing matters. Other problems, including Athlete's Foot, may need treatment to reduce future skin breaks.

Take the prescribed antibiotic on the schedule given and finish the course unless the prescriber changes it. Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, kidney problems, and medicines or supplements you use. Keep any wound clean and covered, avoid picking or squeezing the area, rest, and raise an affected limb when practical. Do not share antibiotics or use an old prescription. If a medicine causes facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread blistering rash, stop and seek emergency help. Arrange review if symptoms are not settling as expected or if the red area continues to extend.

Seek urgent help if the infection spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, the skin turns purple or black, or you develop confusion, faintness, marked weakness, or breathing difficulty. Fever or chills with a worsening skin infection can signal illness beyond the skin, including Sepsis. Same-day advice is appropriate for red streaks, new blisters, reduced movement, or a hand, face, or genital-area infection. Type 2 Diabetes, poor circulation, an ulcer, or reduced immunity warrants prompt contact with a clinician.
