What should you know about cellulitis of trunk?

The trunk includes the chest, abdomen, back, and sides. Cellulitis may follow a surgical wound, scratch, bite, piercing, eczema crack, or other break in the skin. The area can feel warmer than nearby skin and become increasingly sore as inflammation spreads through deeper layers. A clinician will consider the location, size, tenderness, drainage, and your general symptoms. Athlete's Foot can be a separate source of skin breaks, while Type 2 Diabetes may affect wound healing.

Get medical advice promptly for a new or enlarging hot, red, painful, or swollen patch on the trunk. Treatment may include prescribed antibiotics and care for the wound or skin condition that allowed entry. Keep the area clean and covered if advised, avoid rubbing or squeezing it, and do not share or reuse antibiotics. Loose clothing can reduce friction. Note when the change began and whether its edge is moving, so the clinician can assess progression.

Use urgent services if the redness spreads quickly, pain is out of proportion, blisters or dark skin develop, or you have Fever. Confusion, fainting, severe weakness, breathing trouble, or feeling suddenly very ill can be signs of Sepsis and require emergency help. Arrange early review for a trunk infection after surgery or when diabetes or immune problems are present.

Ask what may have caused the skin opening, how to care for the affected area, how to take the prescribed treatment, and which changes need urgent review. Tell the clinician about surgery, bites, piercings, allergies, diabetes, and immune conditions.
