Cellulitis Not Getting Better: What to Do

Redness and swelling can take time to settle, but worsening pain, warmth, or expansion needs review. The infection may involve a deeper pocket, the bacteria may not respond to the initial medicine, or the problem may be another condition that resembles cellulitis. Athlete's foot, poor circulation, diabetes, immune suppression, or an unrecognised injury can also complicate recovery. A clinician may re-examine the border, review medicines, and decide whether drainage, imaging, or different treatment is needed.

Contact the prescribing clinician if the area is spreading, symptoms are intensifying, or you cannot take the medicine as directed. Do not stop or switch treatment on your own. Keep the affected limb raised when comfortable, protect the skin from friction, and avoid squeezing or puncturing it. Photographing the area in consistent lighting can help show change, but it does not replace an examination. Tell the clinician about new fever, vomiting, allergies, diabetes, or missed doses.

Go for urgent assessment if redness spreads rapidly, pain is severe or out of proportion, a limb becomes difficult to move, or fever, chills, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or profound weakness develops. Infection near the eye, on the hand, or around a joint needs prompt attention. Sepsis can develop from a serious infection, so whole-body symptoms are an emergency concern.

Ask whether the original diagnosis still fits, whether a collection or deeper infection is possible, and what response should be expected from the treatment. Ask how to manage Athlete's Foot or diabetes if either could be slowing improvement, and exactly when to return.
