Cellulitis Without a Visible Wound: What to Know

Cellulitis is a deeper bacterial infection of the skin and tissues beneath it. The affected area may become warm, red, swollen, tender, and increasingly uncomfortable. The entry point can close or be too small to notice. Athlete's foot, dry skin, eczema, shaving irritation, or an insect bite can provide an opening. A clinician may assess the skin, nearby lymph nodes, temperature, and overall health; tests are sometimes needed when the diagnosis is unclear.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new, spreading, warm, or painful red area, especially if swelling or fever is present. Do not squeeze the skin or try to drain it. Keep the area clean, avoid scratching, and note whether the edge of redness is expanding. Mention diabetes, immune problems, recent injury, or athlete's foot, because these details can affect care. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it.

Seek urgent help if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, swelling affects movement, or you develop fever, chills, confusion, marked weakness, fast breathing, or dizziness. A red or swollen area near the eye, hand, or genitals also deserves rapid assessment. These changes can signal a more serious infection, including sepsis, and should not wait for a visible wound to appear.

Ask what could have allowed bacteria through, whether Athlete's Foot needs treatment, how to mark or monitor the redness, and what improvement should look like. Confirm when to return if pain, swelling, or fever changes.
