Cellulitis in the nose: symptoms to know

Cellulitis is a deeper skin infection. Around the nose, the skin may become red, hot, swollen, and painful to touch. The area can enlarge over time rather than staying like a small spot. A cracked nostril, scratch, pimple, piercing, or irritation can give bacteria an entry point. Swelling may affect the nose or nearby cheek, and discomfort can make the area feel tight. Symptoms alone cannot confirm cellulitis; a clinician examines the skin and looks for a collection of pus or another cause.

Arrange a same-day medical assessment if redness, pain, warmth, or swelling is developing around the nose. Do not squeeze a boil or pick the skin. Keep the area clean, wash your hands before touching it, and avoid applying leftover antibiotics or steroid creams unless prescribed for this episode. Tell the clinician about allergies, recent nasal procedures, skin breaks, and medicines. Treatment may involve an antibiotic selected for the suspected bacteria; take it exactly as directed and report worsening or a new reaction.

Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, a high temperature, confusion, faintness, marked weakness, or redness spreading toward the eye. Eye swelling, vision changes, severe headache, or difficulty breathing also need immediate attention. These signs can indicate a deeper infection or a serious whole-body response such as sepsis. Do not wait for a home remedy to work when these symptoms appear.
