Cellulitis in Horses: Symptoms

The swelling may involve much of a leg rather than only a small visible wound. The horse may become lame, hold the limb stiffly, resent handling, or develop a fever. A tiny skin break, pastern irritation, bite, or wound can be difficult to find beneath hair or swelling.

These signs are not specific to cellulitis. Tendon or joint injury, lymphatic problems, an abscess, and other infections can look similar, so veterinary examination is needed before treatment is chosen.

Call your veterinarian, describe when the swelling began, whether it is spreading, the horse’s temperature if you can take it safely, and any change in appetite or movement. Keep the horse in a safe, clean area and prevent strenuous exercise until advised.

Do not lance the skin, give leftover antibiotics, or apply irritating products. A veterinarian may recommend cleaning a wound, controlled movement, bandaging, medication, or further tests depending on the findings.

Seek urgent veterinary help if swelling is rapidly increasing, the horse is severely lame, cannot bear weight, has marked pain, develops Fever, or seems dull or distressed. Emergency advice is also appropriate for breathing difficulty, collapse, or profound weakness.

A wound near a joint or tendon sheath deserves particularly prompt attention even when the opening looks small.
