Cellulitis in Hand: Treatment

The hand contains compact compartments, tendons, joints, and nerves. Infection may follow a cut, puncture, bite, splinter, burn, injection, or nail-fold problem. Redness, warmth, tenderness, swelling, and reduced movement can occur, but severe pain with movement may suggest a deeper problem that needs specialist assessment.

A clinician will inspect the wound, check circulation and sensation, and assess finger and joint movement. They may need to look for a foreign body, abscess, tendon-sheath infection, or joint infection.

Seek same-day medical advice for suspected hand cellulitis. Remove rings early if swelling is developing, keep the hand clean and elevated, and protect any open wound with a clean dressing. Avoid squeezing, cutting, or attempting to drain the area.

Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and attend any arranged review. Limit strenuous hand use until a clinician advises that movement is safe.

Get urgent help if swelling spreads quickly, fingers become numb, pale, blue, or difficult to move, or pain is severe or increasing. A deep hand infection can threaten function and may need hospital treatment.
