Cellulitis in Dentistry

A cavity, gum infection, damaged tooth, extraction site, or jaw wound can allow bacteria into surrounding tissues. Facial cellulitis may cause swelling, warmth, redness, tenderness, toothache, or difficulty opening the mouth. The swelling may be inside the mouth, on the cheek, under the jaw, or in the neck.

Dental examination and sometimes imaging help identify an abscess or the tooth responsible. Antibiotics alone may not remove a trapped dental source; drainage, cleaning, root canal treatment, or removal of a tooth may be considered by the dental team.

Contact a dentist urgently and explain the swelling, pain, dental history, and any Fever. Do not press, lance, or repeatedly heat the swelling. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician’s instructions.

Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed, but do not delay dental treatment because symptoms temporarily improve. Eat soft foods and keep the mouth clean without vigorous brushing over a painful wound.

Go to emergency care immediately if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, spreads toward the eye or neck, causes drooling or a muffled voice, or prevents you opening your mouth. Confusion, faintness, or severe illness may indicate Sepsis and requires emergency help.

Marked facial Skin Swelling, worsening Painful Skin, or Fever also warrants urgent review rather than a routine appointment.
