Cellulitis and Hand Swelling

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper skin tissues. In the hand, inflammation may make the fingers or back of the hand look puffy and feel hot or sore. Redness can spread beyond the original area. A cut, cracked skin, bite, puncture, or nail-fold injury may provide an entry point, although the opening is not always visible. Hand swelling also has non-infectious causes, so appearance alone is not enough to confirm cellulitis.

Contact a clinician promptly if the hand is newly red, warm, tender, or increasingly swollen. Remove rings before swelling worsens, raise the hand above heart level when resting, and gently move the fingers if movement is comfortable. Keep any wound clean and covered. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not use leftover antibiotics. Avoid squeezing, cutting, or trying to drain the area yourself.

Seek urgent assessment if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe, a red streak travels up the arm, pus appears, fever or chills develop, or you feel faint or confused. Immediate help is also appropriate when a ring is trapped on a swollen finger, a finger becomes pale or blue, sensation is lost, or finger movement becomes difficult. Worsening symptoms after antibiotics have started also require reassessment.

Ask what supports the diagnosis, whether there could be an abscess or deeper hand infection, and how you should protect any wound. Confirm when improvement should become noticeable, what change should trigger an earlier return, and whether your movement needs checking. Mention diabetes, reduced immunity, recent surgery, animal or human bites, water exposure, and medication allergies because they can influence management.
