Cellulitis from a pimple: what to know

A pimple can become an entry point when it is squeezed, picked, or rubbed until the surface breaks. Cellulitis affects deeper skin than an ordinary spot and may cause expanding redness, warmth, tenderness, and swelling around it. A pocket of pus may instead be an abscess, which sometimes needs drainage. A pimple alone does not establish cellulitis, and a clinician can distinguish these problems by examining the area. Wash the area gently with soap and water, dry it without rubbing, and cover an open spot with a clean dressing. Do not squeeze the pimple, pierce a swelling, or share towels and cosmetics. A cool, clean compress may soothe irritation, while elevating a swollen limb can reduce discomfort.
