Cellulitis is an infection of deeper skin and soft tissue. Around the eyelid or eye socket, swelling can make it difficult to examine the eye and may affect vision, eye movement, or comfort. A small break in the skin, insect bite, injury, sinus problem, or another nearby infection can provide an entry point.

Treatment commonly involves an antibiotic selected for the suspected bacteria and the severity and location of infection. Do not use leftover antibiotics, squeeze the swollen area, or put non-prescribed creams near the eye. Seek urgent medical care for swelling around the eye, new or worsening vision changes, pain when moving the eye, difficulty opening the eye, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, marked drowsiness, or rapidly spreading redness.
