Cellulitis during pregnancy: what to know

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue. The area may become warm, red, swollen, tender, and increasingly painful. The infection can begin through a small cut, scratch, insect bite, cracked skin, or another unnoticed break. Athlete's Foot can create cracks between the toes that let bacteria enter. Pregnancy does not make every red patch cellulitis, so a clinician may examine its borders, warmth, tenderness, and progression before recommending treatment.

Contact your maternity provider, family doctor, or urgent care service promptly if you notice a spreading red or painful area. Tell them you are pregnant, how far along you are, any allergies, and every medicine or supplement you take. Do not start leftover antibiotics or use someone else's prescription. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and mark the outer edge of redness with the time so change is easier to describe. If swelling affects a leg, rest it comfortably while arranging care. Type 2 Diabetes or a history of repeated skin infections should be mentioned because they can affect assessment and follow-up.

Seek emergency care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, confusion, faintness, trouble breathing, a fast heartbeat, or feeling suddenly very unwell. Fever or chills during pregnancy also deserve prompt advice, especially with a worsening skin infection. These symptoms can signal that an infection is affecting the whole body; Sepsis is a medical emergency. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you are deteriorating.

Ask which treatment is suitable in pregnancy, how soon improvement should begin, whether the area needs review, and how to care for the skin while it heals. Ask what changes should prompt same-day help and whether a wound, fungal infection, or another condition could be contributing.
