What should you know about cellulitis clinical features?

Cellulitis often affects one area of an arm or leg and may make the skin feel tight or sore. The border can appear less sharply defined than a simple surface irritation. The area may feel warmer than nearby skin, and movement can be uncomfortable when swelling is present. Some people also develop Fever, tiredness, or chills. A small cut, insect bite, wound, ulcer, or fungal problem such as Athlete's Foot may provide an entry point for bacteria.

These features support a clinical assessment, but they do not identify the cause by themselves. A clinician considers the appearance, speed of change, location, temperature, pulse, general symptoms, and conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes. Do not assume every red patch is cellulitis; eczema, contact reactions, gout, and other problems can look similar.

Have a new or expanding painful red area examined, particularly if it is warm or swollen. Keep any wound gently clean and covered, rest the affected limb, and raise it when comfortable. Avoid applying irritating products or attempting to drain the area. Note when the change began and whether the redness, Painful Skin, or Skin Swelling is progressing. Take prescribed treatment as directed and attend any recommended review.

Get urgent help for rapidly expanding redness, severe or out-of-proportion pain, purple or black skin, blisters, weakness, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or a high Fever with shaking. Face, eye, hand, genital, and foot infections deserve prompt assessment because swelling can affect important structures. Seek early advice as well if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system.

Ask which findings make cellulitis more likely, whether a wound or fungal infection needs treatment, how to track the border, and when the area should be reviewed. Ask for clear instructions about work, exercise, dressings, and pain relief.
