What should you know about cellulitis clindamycin?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection affecting deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that can be prescribed for selected skin infections. It is not appropriate for every case, and a clinician may choose another medicine based on allergies, previous treatment, other medicines, or the suspected bacteria. Redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness can extend beyond the original break in the skin. An antibiotic should be taken exactly as prescribed. Do not share leftover capsules, stop early because the skin looks better, or use someone else's medicine. Diarrhoea during or after clindamycin can sometimes be serious, especially if it is persistent, watery, or bloody.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new area of spreading redness or painful swelling. Keep the affected skin clean, avoid squeezing or scratching it, and elevate an involved limb when practical. Marking the edge of redness can help you notice whether it is expanding, but it does not replace examination. Tell the prescriber about antibiotic allergies, pregnancy, bowel disease, and all medicines or supplements. Follow-up matters if symptoms are not settling as expected.

Seek urgent medical help if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, the skin develops blisters or dark areas, or you feel faint, confused, unusually drowsy, or short of breath. Fever with shaking chills or a fast worsening illness can signal a serious infection. A clinician should assess cellulitis promptly when it affects the face or eye area, follows an animal or human bite, or occurs in someone with diabetes or reduced immunity.
