Cellulitis bump: what it may mean

How the structures involved in Cellulitis differ from normal

Short answer

A cellulitis bump is often a tender, warm area with surrounding redness, but a clinician must distinguish it from an abscess or other lump.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common features
Warmth, tenderness, swelling, and redness around the raised area
Avoid
Do not squeeze, puncture, or lance the bump
Assessment
A clinician may need to check for an abscess

How a bump can appear

Cellulitis commonly presents with a spreading area of red, warm, swollen, painful skin rather than a sharply defined lump. Inflammation can make one area look raised or firm. A pocket of pus, called an abscess, may feel softer in the centre and can need a different procedure, so squeezing it is unsafe. A bite, cut, injection, shaving injury, or cracked skin from Athlete's Foot may be an entry point. A clinician will consider the bump's texture, drainage, size, surrounding redness, and your symptoms.

What to do about the bump

Seek prompt medical advice if the bump is new, enlarging, hot, painful, or surrounded by spreading redness. Keep the skin clean and loosely covered if it is open. Use a warm, clean compress only if a clinician or pharmacist says it is suitable for your situation; never puncture, lance, or squeeze the area yourself. Avoid friction from tight clothing. Photograph the area and note changes in pain, warmth, drainage, or redness so you can describe its progression accurately.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent help if pain escalates quickly, redness spreads, drainage has a foul smell, or the skin becomes dark, grey, or blistered. Fever, shaking chills, confusion, faintness, rapid breathing, or feeling severely unwell may indicate a serious infection and need emergency assessment. Type 2 Diabetes or reduced immunity lowers the threshold for prompt review, even when the bump appears small.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bump is cellulitis, an abscess, an inflamed cyst, or another problem. Ask whether it needs drainage, how to cover it, whether you should monitor the redness boundary, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently.

Questions people ask

Does cellulitis cause a bump?

Cellulitis can make skin look raised or firm, although a distinct bump may also be an abscess, cyst, bite, or another condition.

Can I pop a cellulitis bump?

No. Popping it can push infection deeper or introduce bacteria; arrange an assessment instead.
