What should you know about cellulitis back of neck?

The skin may feel hot, sore, firm, or swollen, with redness or a darker colour that is harder to see on some skin tones. The area can enlarge beyond an insect bite, pimple, scratch, or irritated hair follicle. Neck stiffness, a lump, or drainage may point to another or deeper problem. Cellulitis is a condition diagnosed from the pattern and examination, not from colour alone.

Contact a clinician promptly for a new or enlarging painful patch on the back of the neck. Keep the skin gently washed and dry, avoid rubbing collars or shaving over it, and do not lance a bump. A clinician may prescribe antibiotics and will consider the size, depth, nearby wounds, and your health history. Marking the edge with a pen can help you describe change, but it does not replace review.

Go to emergency care for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, confusion, faintness, or profound weakness. Urgent assessment is also needed when pain is severe or out of proportion, the skin develops blisters or dusky patches, or fever and chills accompany rapid spread. These signs may indicate a serious infection, including sepsis.
