What does cellulitis look like?

The affected skin may look brighter or darker than the surrounding skin, depending on your natural skin tone. It can feel hot, tight, sore, or painful, and the border may become less distinct as inflammation spreads. A cut, cracked skin, bite, wound, or fungal infection such as Athlete's Foot can provide an entry point for bacteria. A fever or feeling unwell can occur alongside the skin changes. The appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis, because several skin problems can cause redness or swelling.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if a new red, warm, painful, or enlarging patch raises concern for Cellulitis. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or scratching it, and note when the change began. A clinician may examine the skin and look for a wound or nearby infection before deciding whether prescription treatment is needed. Do not share leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course early without advice.

Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked swelling, blisters, skin that is turning dusky, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or a high fever. Redness near the eye, severe illness, or reduced immunity also deserves urgent assessment because infection can extend beyond the skin. Emergency symptoms can signal Sepsis or another serious complication.
