Cellulitis and erysipelas: what to know

Both conditions can cause redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, and fever. Erysipelas often appears as a raised, clearly defined red patch, while cellulitis may have less distinct edges and involve deeper layers. The two can overlap, so photographs or a symptom description cannot reliably select treatment. Bacteria may enter through a cut, cracked skin, insect bite, ulcer, or fungal infection such as Athlete's foot.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new expanding red or painful patch. A clinician may mark the edge, inspect for an entry wound, and choose an antibiotic based on the examination. Rest the affected area, keep it clean, avoid picking or vigorous rubbing, and follow the prescribed course. Note when the redness began and whether it is moving beyond its original area.

Seek emergency help for rapid progression, severe pain, confusion, faintness, breathing problems, or a very unwell appearance. Fever and chills alongside a spreading skin infection warrant urgent review because infection can extend beyond the skin.

Ask which layer appears affected, where the bacteria may have entered, how to protect the skin, and what improvement should prompt follow-up rather than waiting.
