Cellulitis and Acute Lymphangitis: What to Know

Cellulitis is infection in deeper skin. Acute lymphangitis is inflammation of lymph vessels, which help drain fluid and support immune defence. It can appear as tender red streaks extending from an infected area toward nearby lymph nodes. Swollen or sore nodes may occur in the groin, armpit, or neck, depending on the affected region. A streak is not a harmless mark to ignore: it can indicate that the infection is extending beyond its starting point.

Contact a clinician promptly for examination when red streaks, increasing warmth, swelling, or pain accompany a skin infection. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and rest the limb if needed. Mark the edge of redness and note the direction and speed of change. Do not massage along the streak or take leftover antibiotics. Mention any wound, bite, ulcer, cracked skin, diabetes, or immune condition that could affect treatment.

Seek emergency care if the streaks are rapidly advancing or you develop fever, shaking chills, confusion, faintness, severe weakness, fast breathing, or severe pain. These symptoms can signal a spreading infection or sepsis. Emergency assessment is also needed for swelling that threatens movement, circulation, or breathing. Children, older adults, and people with reduced immunity should receive advice quickly when symptoms progress.

Ask whether the streaks represent lymphangitis, whether lymph nodes are involved, which treatment is needed, and how soon improvement should begin. Ask what changes should trigger another review and how to care for the original break in the skin.
