Cellulitis All Over the Body: What to Know

Cellulitis usually begins in a defined area where bacteria enter through a break in the skin, such as a cut, ulcer, bite, or cracked skin. Redness in many separated areas may mean more than one process is present, while one broad area can reflect infection, allergy, inflammation, or another condition. Pain, warmth, swelling, and tenderness help a clinician assess the pattern. Do not assume every red patch is cellulitis, but do treat rapidly spreading or painful skin changes as a medical concern.

Arrange urgent medical review today, especially if the affected areas are expanding or you have fever or feel weak. Avoid applying new creams, scratching, or covering large areas tightly. Take photographs and note when each area appeared, any wound or sting, and medicines you have taken. Tell the clinician about diabetes, poor circulation, immune suppression, recent procedures, or previous cellulitis. Widespread disease may need examination of the whole body and treatment chosen for its severity.

Go to emergency care for confusion, faintness, very fast breathing, severe drowsiness, shaking chills, rapidly worsening pain, purple or blistered skin, or inability to keep fluids down. Fever with a rapidly spreading skin infection can be a warning of sepsis. New swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, or trouble breathing suggests an allergic emergency. Do not wait for a home treatment to work when these signs occur.

Ask what pattern they see, where the infection may have entered, whether tests or hospital treatment are needed, and how to recognise improvement. Ask how to protect cracked skin and manage conditions that increase infection risk, including diabetes or athlete's foot.
