Cellulite on the Hamstrings: What to Know

Short answer
Cellulite on the hamstrings is usually a visible skin texture pattern created by connective bands and underlying tissue, not a diagnosis of muscle disease.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Location
- Back of the thigh over the hamstring region
- Visibility
- May change with posture or muscle contraction
- Before treatment
- Exclude injury, swelling, and a new lump
The back-of-thigh pattern
Hamstring cellulite may appear as dimples or ripples across the back of the thighs and can be more visible when the hip is bent or the muscle is tightened. The appearance varies with skin elasticity, genetics, tissue volume, and the way fibrous bands attach the skin below. It does not mean the hamstring is injured. Muscle soreness, bruising, weakness, or a sudden bulge point toward a different problem and should not be labelled cellulite without examination.
Planning care
A clinician can assess the area standing and in motion, then explain whether the main issue is tethering, laxity, or contour. Strength training and ordinary activity support overall function, while procedures aim at selected aspects of surface texture. Options that may be discussed include Subcision for suitable depressions, Radiofrequency Skin Tightening or RF Microneedling for laxity, and Carboxytherapy in selected settings. Ask about bruising, activity restrictions, skin type, medicines, and the possibility that more than one approach may be considered.
When to seek care
Have a new area checked if it is painful, hot, red, rapidly swollen, associated with fever, or accompanied by weakness or difficulty walking. Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided leg swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness. A firm fixed lump, unexplained bruising, or skin ulcer also requires medical review before cosmetic treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what the examination shows when the hamstring is relaxed and contracted, whether a sports injury or swelling could explain the change, and which treatment targets the visible feature. Discuss preparation, recovery, follow-up, and how to report worsening pain or swelling.

Questions people ask
Does hamstring cellulite mean the muscle is damaged?
No. Cellulite concerns the skin and tissues beneath it; pain, weakness, or a sudden contour change may indicate another issue.
Can leg exercises improve hamstring cellulite?
Exercise may support muscle tone and function, but it does not directly release the connective bands that form dimples.
