Cellulite on the Chin: What to Know

Classic cellulite most often affects the thighs and buttocks. On the chin, a rough or dimpled surface may instead become more visible when the mentalis muscle contracts, after changes in skin laxity, or around local fat and connective tissue. A clinician will look for whether the texture is present at rest, changes with expression, feels soft or firm, and is accompanied by redness, scale, pain, or a distinct lump. Do not assume every chin depression is cellulite or try to break it up with forceful massage.

Begin with an in-person skin examination, particularly if the change is new. Depending on the finding, a clinician may discuss skin-tightening approaches such as Radiofrequency Skin Tightening or RF Microneedling. Carboxytherapy or Subcision may be considered only when the anatomy and cause make them appropriate; facial treatment requires careful planning around nerves, vessels, and delicate skin. Ask about alternatives, expected texture changes, downtime, sun protection, and the practitioner’s experience treating the chin.

Seek prompt medical advice for a chin change that grows quickly, becomes painful, red, warm, ulcerated, numb, or associated with facial weakness or difficulty swallowing. A hard fixed lump, drainage, or a persistent unexplained change also merits assessment before any cosmetic procedure. Sudden swelling with breathing difficulty is an emergency.

Ask what is causing the texture, whether it is visible at rest or mainly with movement, and whether an examination or imaging is needed. Clarify why a proposed treatment is suitable for the chin, the likely recovery, and what signs should trigger follow-up.
