What should you know about cellulite marks?

Cellulite is a three-dimensional texture change: fibrous connective bands tether the skin while underlying fat creates pressure beneath it. It can appear as dimples, shallow valleys, or an orange-peel surface, often on the thighs, buttocks, hips, or abdomen. Unlike a scar, it does not require an injury. Unlike a bruise or pigment mark, its main feature is contour rather than colour. Several conditions can coexist, so a dark, scaly, crusted, bleeding, or itchy mark should not be labelled cellulite from appearance alone.

Take a clear photograph in consistent lighting if you want to monitor a gradual texture change, and avoid harsh scrubbing that can irritate the skin. Movement and strength work can support body composition and muscle tone, though they may not erase dimpling. A qualified clinician may discuss carboxytherapy, radiofrequency skin tightening, RF microneedling, or subcision. Each option has different mechanisms, recovery needs, and limits; the choice should follow an examination.

Book a skin assessment for a mark that is new, rapidly changing, painful, persistently itchy, bleeding, crusted, ulcerated, or associated with swelling. Urgent care is appropriate for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, or sudden swelling. These features point away from simple cosmetic cellulite and should not be treated with an aesthetic procedure first.

Ask whether the mark is a texture change, pigment change, scar, or inflammation; whether it needs examination; and which treatment could improve contour without aggravating the skin.
