What should you know about celiac rash hands?

The skin condition most closely linked with coeliac disease is dermatitis herpetiformis, an intensely itchy eruption caused by an immune response. It often appears as grouped bumps or small blisters, commonly on both sides of the body. Hands can be involved, although other areas may be affected too. Cracking, redness, scaling, or soreness on the hands can also come from irritants, eczema, allergy, infection, or psoriasis. A clinician may ask about digestive symptoms, weight change, tiredness, family history, and whether the eruption is symmetrical or very itchy. Testing for coeliac disease is different from testing the rash itself; do not start a gluten-free diet before discussing testing, because it can affect results.

Arrange a medical review if the rash persists, returns, or is difficult to control. Photograph a flare in good light and record new soaps, gloves, medicines, foods, and activities. Use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser after washing, choose gentle cleansers, and avoid scratching or popping blisters. A doctor may examine the skin and arrange blood tests or a skin biopsy when appropriate. Treatment may involve a prescribed medicine for the eruption together with management of confirmed coeliac disease.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, rapidly spreading hives, or a rash with fever and serious illness. Prompt assessment is also sensible for painful warmth, pus, red streaks, rapidly worsening swelling, or open cracks that prevent normal hand use.
