Short answer

Bloating is a common presentation of coeliac disease, which can inflame the small intestine after gluten exposure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common presentation
Bloating can accompany diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fatigue in coeliac disease.
Before testing
Discuss coeliac testing before removing gluten from meals.
Possible deficiencies
Poor absorption may contribute to iron or vitamin B12 deficiency.

What coeliac bloating can involve

Most people with coeliac disease notice digestive symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or changes in bowel habit, although symptoms vary. Immune-related inflammation can interfere with digestion and absorption. Iron or vitamin B12 deficiency may contribute to fatigue or other symptoms. Bloating is not specific to coeliac disease, so its presence does not show that a person has the condition.

How to arrange assessment

Book a medical appointment if bloating persists or appears with diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss, recurrent abdominal pain or signs of deficiency. Ask about coeliac blood testing before removing gluten, because a gluten-free diet can affect the results. Keep a simple symptom and food record, but avoid using it as a substitute for testing. A Blood Test may be one part of the assessment.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care for bloating with blood in the stool, black stools, repeated vomiting, dehydration, unexplained weight loss or worsening weakness. Obtain urgent help for severe or sudden abdominal pain, fainting, a rigid swollen abdomen or difficulty breathing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which coeliac tests are suitable while you are eating gluten, whether anaemia or vitamin deficiency should be checked, and whether your bowel symptoms need another explanation. Mention family history, previous test results, dietary changes and symptom timing.

Questions people ask

Does coeliac disease always cause bloating?

No. Symptoms vary, and some people have little or no digestive discomfort. Testing may still be needed when other features suggest coeliac disease.

Can I diagnose coeliac disease from a food diary?

No. A diary can show patterns for discussion, but it cannot replace medical assessment and appropriate testing.
